User Testing Report
What'cha been up to?
Capstone. Capstone. Capstone. And maybe the occasional coffee break, work, and other classes.
I've been working on polishing my app design, in order for it to be prepared for user testing. I'd say it's test-ready! I still have a lot of stuff to do. I also created my first video ad for this project as well!
If you are new to my blog, welcome! If you'd like to learn about it, please refer to my first post! Click me!
User Testing Report
I had to prepare a set of questions to ask my interviewers as they interacted with my app. I actually pulled out some old questions I've used in my UX/UI class last year, since a lot the questions helped me gain better insight whenever I conducted user testing. I created a script that went over the app step-by-step, up until I had the user try to use the app on their own. After that, I asked them some post-testing questions on their experience and additional feedback.
Below is my list of questions, plus part of my script! Since my interaction doesn't take a long time to get through, it appears a bit short. As I conducted my interviews, on average, they lasted about 20 minutes.
Pre-testing Questions:
- Do you like plushies or stuffed animals?
- How comfortable are you with technology?
- Have you ever created your own stuffed animal or plushie? If so, where?
- Have you heard about or used any apps or websites where you can create your own plushie or toy?
[Log in screen]
What would you do here?
Go ahead and try to sign-in. As I've stated before, any typed information is just a placeholder, but we can pretend that is yours.
[Select a character screen]
What do you think you do on this page?
Let’s pretend that you want to pick Matcha. So go ahead and click her profile card. And read the information.
How easy was that interaction? What do you think of this part of the interaction thus far?
[Customize]
Take a minute to review this screen, what do you think this is and how do you think you can interact with it?
What would you do next? (hopefully they’ll pick a color first)
[Color clicked]
Review this screen and tell me what you see. Is that what you expected?
Go ahead try to navigate through the rest of the app. I’ll give you a little hint. Pretend you’d like for the character to have a rainbow shirt, and light blue jeans, and keep the same leaf on their head. After that, you'll want to purchase your creation.
Clarifying and overall questions:
- On a scale of 1 to 5, with 5 being very easy, and 1 being very difficult, how would you rate that experience?
- What would you change about the overall experience?
- What did you like about this experience/app?
- What did you dislike?
- Would this be an app that you would use or recommend to anyone?
- For an app that offers a way to create a custom plushie, what are some things that could be improved to help users have an easier experience?
Users
- Jack, he/him, 11 years old
- Jack is a middle schooler, who's really into video gaming and hanging out with his friends. He also likes stuffed animals.
- Mario, they/them, 25 years old
- Mario is a freelance concept artist. They enjoy drawing, video gaming, and learning new things.
- Anne, she/her, 23 years old
- Anne is a senior in college, studying Psychology. She adores Japanese plushies and cute things in general, and she also works in retail.
Specific Findings
- For the character selection screen, I made the character cards look like buttons. While users were testing my app, they confirmed that they could click on the character cards.
- Simple layout = easy navigation = straight to the point, the users didn't have trouble navigating through my app to find specific things.
- Information was easy to understand as well.
- User did not expect to see prices under each customizable screen.
- Users didn't know they had to scroll on certain menus.
- A user had trouble logging in, mainly due to wireframe issues.
- A user suggested to omit the "moon child" shirt, since it relates to a certain religion and they didn't recommend it. Instead, change the black shirt design to just a moon.
- Users wanted more options to choose from for the accessories page.
- A user did not expect the color changing page to look as it is.
Broad Insights
- Users were quick to learn how to use the app.
- Users understood the basics of how to customize the character.
- Users didn't have too many questions. I think because of how I explained my app.
- Most users would recommend the app to a friend or would use it themselves.
- Users thought the characters were cute.
Feedback / Redesign
- Add a dark mode (p.s. I already did but I didn't include it into the user testing because I mainly wanted feedback on the main design).
- Add more accessories to choose from.
- Add a tutorial or onboarding for new users to better learn how to use the app on their own.
- Consider raising "prices" of the assets, because in a real world scenario, I'd have to keep in mind of production costs and shipping costs.
- Make the app icons bigger.
- Add a sliding bar or some indicator for the user to know that they have to scroll sideways (literally, all of users mentioned that).
That's it, folks!
